How to Choose the Right Dosing & Weighing System for Packaging Machines

2026/10/23 150 views

Pcking the correct dosing or weighing unit is one of the biggest decisions when configuring your automatic packaging line. Many buyers focus only on the packing machine frame itself, yet the filling/weighing module directly determines accuracy, running speed, maintenance workload and final product yield.

There is no universal “best” solution. Everything comes down to your product type, flow behavior, target fill weight and production targets. Below we break down practical options for different materials.

Solid Block Products: Multihead Combination Weigher or Voumetric Cup Feeder

For irregular or solid block goods, multihead combination weighers are our go-to recommendation. They deliver great weighing accuracy and consistent running speed for most block packaging projects.

If your budget is tighter or the application is relatively simple, rotary volumetric cup feeders can work as a cost-effective alternative.

Small Granular Materials: Volumetric Cup Feeder & Linear Weigher

Free-flowing small granules are very common in food packaging. Two popular dosing setups fit this category: open-close rotary cup feeders and linear weighers. Linear weighers shine for users who require steady weighing precision at medium production speeds. Cup feeders, on the other hand, are simpler and easier to maintain.

Powder Products: Auger Screw Filler or Volumetric Cup Feeder

Powder can be tricky. Auger screw fillers are the standard choice for most poor-flowing, fine powders. That said, not all powders need an auger. Free-flowing powder such as white granulated sugar works perfectly with volumetric cup feeders. Our general rule: choose cup feeders instead of augers whenever possible. They are simpler to clean and have fewer wear parts.

Liquid & Viscous Paste: Paste Pump and Rotary Lobe Pump

Liquid and paste filling relies on positive displacement pumps. We mainly offer two types: paste pumps and rotary lobe pumps. As a practical reference, paste pumps are ideal for small fill volumes below 1.5 kg. When your target fill weight exceeds 1.5 kg, rotary lobe pumps will provide more stable performance for continuous operation.

Counting Applications: Vibratory Bowl Counter or Multihead Weigher

When you need to count individual parts like screws, plastic blocks and small hardware pieces, vibratory bowl counters are the classic solution. Typical counting output sits between 100–200 pieces per minute. The exact speed varies a lot based on the size, shape and surface texture of your parts. One important alternative worth considering: if you pack a large batch count and each piece has a stable weight, counting by weight with a multihead combination weigher is often more reliable and faster.

Wrap Up: Work With a Manufacturer to Match Your Product

Every product behaves differently during filling. What works well for one factory may not suit yours.

At LAKERPACK,  based in Foshan China, we tailor packaging and dosing systems for food, hardware, daily chemical and other industries. If you are unsure which weighing or filling unit fits your goods, send us your sample details and production requirements. Our team can propose a matched packaging solution for you.
